The Sarasbagh Ganesh Temple have a beautiful and rich historical past. In 1784, Shrimant Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa built a small temple in and installed the idol of Shree Siddhivinayak, the God he worshipped. Naturally Parvati, Sarasbaug and the lake became places of worship and leisurely walks for the people of Pune. Folklore says that Shrimant Nanasaheb Peshwa and his astute consultants, conducted secret meetings and discussions while on the boat ride in this lake.

The chief adoration of the temple, Shri Ganesh, is called Shri Siddhivinayak, because its trunk is bent right. Due to the position above the island in the middle of a lake, the temple is also popular as the name of Talyatla Ganpati Mandir.
